Vermont was admitted to the Union on March 4, 1791, as the 14th state and the first state to join the original thirteen colonies. Vermont had maintained its independence as the Vermont Republic for fourteen years before seeking admission. Statehood brought Vermont into the federal system while preserving much of the local governance tradition that Vermonters prized.
