Utah Statehood

Utah Statehood

Utah was admitted to the Union on January 4, 1896, as the 45th state. The path to statehood had been long and complicated by conflicts over polygamy, which the Latter-day Saint church practiced until 1890. Utah's eventual admission reflected both the church's decision to end the practice and the territory's demonstrated capacity for self-governance.
