In July 1847, a group of Latter-day Saint pioneers led by Brigham Young arrived in the Salt Lake Valley and declared it their new home. The pioneers had crossed the plains and mountains from Illinois and Iowa seeking freedom from persecution. Their settlement of the Salt Lake Valley and the surrounding region transformed the Great Basin and shaped Utah's culture and identity.
