The NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, known today as Johnson Space Center, was established in Houston in 1961 to direct America's human spaceflight program. Houston's connection to spaceflight became permanent through the phrase Houston, we have a problem and the city's identity as Space City. Texas's role in the space program has continued through subsequent decades of missions.
