In 1980, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the Black Hills had been taken from the Lakota Sioux in violation of the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty and awarded more than 100 million dollars in compensation. The Lakota nations have refused to accept the money, insisting instead on the return of the land.
