Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began carving the faces of four American presidents into the granite of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills in 1927. The project took fourteen years to complete and created one of the most recognizable monuments in the United States. Mount Rushmore draws millions of visitors to South Dakota each year.
