In January 1963, Harvey Gantt became the first African American student to enroll at Clemson University, integrating the institution peacefully at a time when other Southern schools had experienced violent resistance. Gantt's enrollment represented a significant step in the desegregation of South Carolina's public universities. He later became the mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina.
