The end of the Civil War brought dramatic change to South Carolina, as Union forces occupied the state and Reconstruction began. Formerly enslaved people exercised new political rights, and African Americans served in the state legislature in significant numbers during Reconstruction. The period of change was followed by decades of violent repression that reversed many of the gains of Reconstruction.
