South Carolina's political leaders, led by John C. Calhoun, developed the doctrine of nullification in response to federal tariff laws they considered harmful to Southern interests. The Nullification Crisis of 1832-1833 brought South Carolina to the brink of secession nearly three decades before the Civil War.
