The Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge, opened in 1969, spans Narragansett Bay and connects Newport with Jamestown and the mainland, dramatically improving transportation and commerce in southern Rhode Island. The bridge is one of the longest suspension bridges in New England. Named for Rhode Island's longtime senator, it became a landmark of the state's modern infrastructure.
