Samuel Slater established the first successful water-powered cotton spinning mill in the United States at Pawtucket, Rhode Island, in 1793. Slater brought knowledge of British textile machinery and adapted it to American conditions, launching the American Industrial Revolution. The Slater Mill became a model for factory production that spread across New England.
