From July 1 to 3, 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg in southern Pennsylvania was the bloodiest engagement of the Civil War and a decisive turning point for the Union. Confederate General Robert E. Lee's attempt to invade the North was repulsed with enormous casualties. President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, delivered at the dedication of the battlefield cemetery, became one of the most enduring statements of American democratic ideals.
