In March 1913, heavy rains caused devastating floods across Ohio, particularly in Dayton, where the Great Flood killed hundreds of people and caused enormous property damage. The disaster prompted the construction of one of the most comprehensive flood control systems in the United States. The Miami Conservancy District's system of retarding basins became a model for flood management.
