Advances in hydraulic fracturing technology unlocked the massive oil reserves of the Bakken Formation beneath western North Dakota, triggering an economic boom that brought rapid population growth and prosperity to the region. North Dakota briefly became the second-largest oil producer in the United States. The boom transformed western North Dakota while also bringing infrastructure challenges and environmental concerns.
