The Garrison Dam on the Missouri River, completed in 1953 and named in honor of the project's construction years beginning in 1947, created Lake Sakakawea, one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States. The project brought hydroelectric power, flood control, and water storage to the region. It also flooded the homelands of the Three Affiliated Tribes, a loss that has never been forgotten.
