North Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889, as the 39th state. Settlement of the Red River Valley and the broader plains had accelerated through the 1870s and 1880s as railroads reached the territory. Statehood gave North Dakotans representation in the federal government and the ability to shape their own future.
