In the fall of 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition established Fort Mandan near present-day Washburn, North Dakota, where they spent the winter among the Mandan and Hidatsa peoples. It was there that Sacagawea and her husband joined the expedition as guides and interpreters. Fort Mandan became a crucial rest and resupply point on the journey to the Pacific.
