Roanoke Colony

In 1587, English colonists established a settlement on Roanoke Island, creating the first English attempt at permanent settlement in North America. When the governor returned from England three years later, the colonists had vanished, leaving only the carved word CROATOAN. The mystery of the Lost Colony has fascinated historians and researchers for more than four centuries.
