The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 connected the Hudson River to the Great Lakes, creating a water highway that transformed American commerce. Goods could now move cheaply and quickly between the interior of the continent and the port of New York. The canal fueled New York City's rise as the dominant commercial center in North America.
