In 1624, Dutch colonists established New Amsterdam at the southern tip of Manhattan Island, creating a trading post that would grow into one of the world's great cities. The Dutch colony attracted merchants and settlers from across Europe, establishing New York's tradition of diversity from its earliest days. New Amsterdam was captured by the English in 1664 and renamed New York.
