In 1943, the U.S. government established a secret laboratory at Los Alamos, New Mexico, as part of the Manhattan Project. Scientists from across the country and world gathered there to develop the first atomic bomb. Los Alamos National Laboratory continues to be one of the most important scientific research institutions in the United States.
