In 1664, the English took control of the region between the Hudson and Delaware rivers, establishing the colony of New Jersey. Named after the Isle of Jersey, the colony attracted settlers from New England, Europe, and neighboring colonies. New Jersey's diverse population and fertile land made it one of the most prosperous of the original colonies.
