Beginning in 1951, the Nevada Test Site in the desert north of Las Vegas became the primary location for above-ground nuclear weapons tests by the United States. Hundreds of nuclear explosions were detonated there over several decades. The testing contributed to advances in weapons design but also raised significant concerns about radiation exposure.
