The 1870s brought waves of homesteaders to Nebraska's vast grasslands, drawn by free land under the Homestead Act and the promise of a new beginning. Immigrant communities from Germany, Scandinavia, and elsewhere put down roots across the state. The settlement of the Great Plains transformed Nebraska from open prairie to a patchwork of farms and communities.
