On June 25 and 26, 1876, Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors defeated U.S. Army forces led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in southeastern Montana. The battle was one of the most significant Native American military victories in the history of the American West. It became one of the most studied and debated military engagements in American history.
