In 1805, the Lewis and Clark Expedition traveled through what is now Montana on their journey to the Pacific Coast. The Corps of Discovery documented the region's rivers, mountains, and wildlife, as well as the Native peoples who had lived there for thousands of years. Their accounts opened the way for American exploration and eventual settlement of the northern Rocky Mountain region.
