St. Louis emerged as the primary departure point for overland trails heading west during the mid-nineteenth century. Tens of thousands of migrants outfitted their wagons, assembled their parties, and set out for Oregon, California, and the Southwest from Missouri's riverside city. The Missouri River became the highway of westward expansion.
