In the summer of 1964, hundreds of civil rights workers came to Mississippi to help register Black voters and challenge systematic denial of voting rights. The murders of three workers near Philadelphia, Mississippi, drew national attention. Freedom Summer helped build momentum for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
