The Siege of Vicksburg was a critical campaign of the Civil War in which Union General Ulysses S. Grant surrounded and starved the Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River into surrender in July 1863. The fall of Vicksburg gave the Union control of the entire Mississippi River and split the Confederacy in two. Vicksburg National Military Park preserves the ground where this turning point was decided.
