The Mackinac Bridge, completed in 1957, spans the Straits of Mackinac connecting Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. At the time of its construction, it was one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. The bridge unified Michigan geographically and economically, opening the Upper Peninsula to greater development and tourism.
