In March 1770, British soldiers fired into a crowd of colonists on King Street in Boston, killing five men in an event that became known as the Boston Massacre. The incident inflamed colonial resentment against British rule and was used by patriots to build opposition to British authority. Paul Revere's famous engraving of the event spread news of the clash throughout the colonies.
