The Chesapeake Bay Bridge opened in 1952, connecting Maryland's Eastern Shore to the western part of the state and dramatically improving transportation and commerce. The bridge opened previously isolated communities to new economic opportunities. It remains one of Maryland's most important pieces of infrastructure.
