In September 1814, British forces attacked Baltimore during the War of 1812, bombarding Fort McHenry through the night. Francis Scott Key, watching from a ship in the harbor, was inspired by the sight of the American flag still flying over the fort at dawn to write the poem that became the national anthem. The Battle of Baltimore became a defining moment in American national identity.
