Maryland Colony Founded

In 1634, the Ark and the Dove carried the first English colonists to the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, establishing the Maryland colony under a charter granted to Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore. The colony was founded with an intent to provide a refuge for English Catholics while also welcoming Protestants. Maryland's early religious diversity distinguished it from many other colonies.
