The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in American history to that point, inundating millions of acres across the lower Mississippi Valley. Hundreds of thousands of people, disproportionately Black Louisianans, were displaced from their homes and farms. The disaster prompted the federal government to take a leading role in flood control along the Mississippi River.
