In April 1862, Union naval forces captured New Orleans, and the city became the first major Confederate city to fall under Union control. The occupation lasted through the end of the war and into Reconstruction. Louisiana's experience of war, occupation, and Reconstruction left lasting marks on its politics, culture, and social structure.
