Mammoth Cave, the world's longest known cave system, was established as a national park in 1941, protecting a remarkable underground landscape of vast chambers, rivers, and unique ecosystems. The cave had attracted visitors for more than a century before receiving federal protection. Mammoth Cave National Park draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to south-central Kentucky each year.
