Through the mid-1850s, pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers flooded into Kansas and fought a series of violent confrontations that earned the territory the name Bleeding Kansas. Both sides established competing governments and carried out raids and attacks against each other. The conflict previewed the Civil War and made Kansas a national symbol of the struggle over slavery.
