Iowa was admitted to the Union on December 28, 1846, as the 29th state. Settlement had grown steadily along the rivers and across the rolling prairies as migrants moved westward. Statehood brought formal governance to the territory and encouraged further settlement of Iowa's productive agricultural lands.
