On May 30, 1911, the first Indianapolis 500-Mile Race was held at the newly constructed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The race drew enormous crowds and quickly became one of the most prestigious automobile racing events in the world. The Indianapolis 500 has been held nearly every year since and remains a major cultural event for the state.
