Construction of the Wabash and Erie Canal through Indiana during the 1830s and 1840s created a water highway connecting the Great Lakes to the Ohio River. The canal opened new markets for Indiana's farmers and fueled growth in communities along its route. Though eventually replaced by railroads, the canal era shaped Indiana's economic geography.
