Illinois Statehood

Illinois joined the Union on December 3, 1818, as the 21st state. The Illinois country had attracted settlers from the east following the American Revolution, and its rich farmland and river access made it an attractive destination. Statehood gave Illinois a voice in national debates and accelerated settlement of the surrounding region.
