In 1733, James Oglethorpe established the colony of Georgia as a refuge and a buffer between British Carolina and Spanish Florida. Savannah, founded that same year, became one of the first planned cities in America. Georgia's colonial history reflected British ambitions to expand settlement along the southeastern coast.
