In 1802, Éleuthère Irénée du Pont established a gunpowder mill along the Brandywine Creek near Wilmington. The company grew over the following two centuries into one of the world's largest chemical and materials corporations. DuPont's presence shaped Wilmington's economy and made Delaware a center of chemical research and manufacturing.
