Colorado joined the Union on August 1, 1876, earning the nickname the Centennial State because statehood came in the year of America's 100th anniversary. The state's mountain resources, growing agricultural communities, and expanding railroad network supported its development. Statehood gave Colorado a stronger voice in national affairs.
