The completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913 brought water from the Owens Valley across hundreds of miles of desert and mountains to Los Angeles. The project, engineered by William Mulholland, made large-scale urban growth possible in Southern California. It remains one of the most significant feats of civil engineering in American history.
