The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed in 1848, ended the Mexican-American War and transferred California and a vast southwestern territory to the United States. The treaty reshaped the map of North America and brought California under American governance just as gold was about to be discovered. It remains one of the most consequential agreements in the history of westward expansion.
