Long known for its natural thermal springs, Hot Springs attracted visitors seeking rest and relaxation throughout the nineteenth century. Federal protection helped preserve the area's unique natural resources and public access to the springs. The site later became Hot Springs National Park, one of the most recognized landmarks in Arkansas.
