In 1540, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado led an expedition through parts of what is now Arizona while searching for legendary cities said to hold great wealth. Although those stories proved to be myths, the journey expanded European knowledge of the Southwest. The expedition became one of the earliest recorded chapters in Arizona's documented history.
