The Montgomery Bus Boycott began in December 1955 and lasted for more than a year. Thousands of residents chose to walk, carpool, and support one another in a peaceful effort to challenge local bus policies. The movement brought national attention to Montgomery and became one of the defining moments of the Civil Rights era.
